Based in Pontarlier, eastern France, La Marmite Solidaire develops innovative initiatives centred on its community kitchen, conceived as a place for meeting, sharing and learning. Through its programme, "Sowing Health, Harvesting Connections", the organisation addresses food insecurity while strengthening community cohesion and civic engagement across the Haut-Doubs region.
The programme is built around the recovery and transformation of surplus food into nutritious meals distributed through local food-aid organisations. What sets it apart is the active involvement of beneficiaries, who take part in food preparation activities alongside young volunteers, as well as awareness-raising initiatives designed for families.
As the volume of surplus food from large retailers has declined, the programme evolved in 2025 with the launch of a large-scale community food collection initiative in Pontarlier and the surrounding area. Local residents, secondary school students, volunteers and vulnerable individuals work together to harvest unused fruit and vegetables from private gardens, which are then redistributed or transformed into meals. The initiative addresses several challenges at once: diversifying food-aid supplies, reducing waste, making better use of local resources, and strengthening social and intergenerational ties.
Alongside these activities, the programme offers cooking workshops open to all, promoting sustainable eating habits. La Marmite Solidaire now aims to establish a structured food and nutrition education module, co-designed with healthcare professionals and local stakeholders, to encourage healthier and more sustainable dietary practices, particularly among vulnerable groups.
