In Hong Kong, Food Angel turns food waste into assistance. The programme’s teams work with some 260 NGO partners to offer dignity and support to the most vulnerable, while innovating to ensure more humane and sustainable food distribution.
Food Angel is a food recovery and assistance programme launched by the Bo Charity Foundation, which involves rescuing foodstuffs that can still be consumed from various sectors of the agri-food industry. This food is transformed into nutritious meals or food parcels, then redistributed to people in need in Hong Kong.
In 2020, Food Angel launched a network of meal vending machines to complement traditional distribution via partner NGOs. This network, spread across several districts of Hong Kong, has improved the efficiency of the programme and offered greater flexibility to its beneficiaries.
Food Angel has also opened a concept store called the Rice Boy Station, which acts as a mini grocery shop. This shop enables eligible beneficiaries to choose food products freely and in complete dignity, using digital tokens redeemable via a mobile app.
Receiving no regular government funding, the Food Angel programme relies on the ongoing engagement of private and institutional donors. The donation from the Audemars Piguet Foundation for Common Good aims to support the production of hot meals, particularly for the elderly. By strengthening this essential and traditional cornerstone of the programme, it is helping to consolidate the organisation as a whole, enabling it to continue innovating and having a lasting impact on the food distribution sector.
In total, the Foundation’s contribution will enable Food Angel and its NGO partners to distribute nearly 381,000 hot meals over a three-year period.
By nourishing people’s bodies, Food Angel also nourishes their hearts. With the steadfast commitment of its partners, the organisation continues to build a model of solidarity, innovation and sustainability for a fairer and more humane society.
